Is there any place for classics? - есе (argumentative essay)

The prototype of abstract photography is abstract painting either in impressionistic, or cubism, or any other trends. The main idea is evidently borrowed from these forms of art, but the technical equipment of photography is much richer and more powerful. The works of art created in the style of abstract photography take special place among all other kinds of photography. Nevertheless, many people, especially those who are quite far from being involved into the sphere of professional picture-taking, state that abstract photography has no artistic and communicative value, though standing apart form an average snapshot. Their opinion is somehow defending the privilege of classical photography to be on the podium. As a matter of fact, abstract photography (along with the conceptual one) is fighting for leadership and engrossing people’s attention with saucy ideas, audacious techniques and vague images. That is why it is not surprising that lots of people go conservative speaking in support of classical photography.

Others, ranking among non-conformists, plead for breaking obsolete trends of art and strive to go beyond ordinary way of thinking which is meant to be too much on-the-surface. "To make a fruitful thought evoke from the depths of human thinking, one needs to employ methods which have rarely been used – that is, to make use of abstract images for affecting person’s senses.” Some people think for a photo to be abstract it has to be unrecognizable, which is right to some extent I guess, but there are lots of other ways to consider a photo to be abstract. To be honest, like with a lot of things, there are no right or wrong answers really. The only true criterion is that if you are more interested in apparent aesthetic beauty rather than in the object itself, then abstract photography is for you. But does that mean that there is no place left for classical pictures? Has classical photography become old-fashioned and unwanted?

What we need to bear in mind giving answers to these questions is that no kind of recognized art can lose its value and become rejected. Everybody has their own preferences, and it would be absurd to obtrude your opinions upon others. I’m sure that the fact of abstract photography having so many adherents indicates a regular significant shift in the system of modern people’s values. This shift has taken place within the system of artistic master samples and ideals.

At the same time, the popular trend of postmodernism has also some bearing on these changes. The philosophy of postmodernism with its irrationality sets new standards in art, as well as in photography. Postmodernists claim our cultural concepts need to undergo serious alterations in order to produce some new meaningful thoughts. This ideology is imposed on us everywhere and every minute. That is why modern trends in photographic art differ enormously from what we used to see.

For my part, I stick to the point that an educated talented person must explore all the possibilities to show his/her skills. Abstract photography is a suitable area for innovations and inventions. But on the other hand, classics will never become boring and obsolete for photographers as it is the basis for all other diversions in the art of photography.
